What The Heck is Pelvic PT?!
People ask me all the time, what is pelvic floor physical therapy? Initially, I always thought it was sad that it was not known, however as I’ve become more experienced I am realizing it is my job to make sure it is KNOWN what I do!
Pelvic floor physical therapy treats all the things that can go wrong “down there” or in the region between the legs, but it is SO MUCH more than that. You can also think of it as the type of therapy utilized for treating problems with pregnancy, sex, pooping, or peeing.
When you see a pelvic floor physical therapist, you can expect to have a full orthopedic examination of how you move, your posture, muscle strength and flexibility, as well as palpation or tenderness.
You also will get a very thorough examination of how your hips, tailbone, and sacrum move during different movements like a squat or changing positions from sitting to lying down, how well you are breathing, if you are using the right muscles, etc. So, you get it all!!!!
Pelvic floor physical therapy is training outside of what we already get in order to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy and one that requires us to continue to take continuing education to stay up to date on the research and necessary approaches!
