So last week I told you a little bit about my journey and life of having pelvic floor dysfunction and being disrespected in the healthcare system. I also mentioned to you about my journey to becoming a pelvic floor physical therapist myself. 

I started my first job fresh out of Doctorate of Physical Therapy school in 2016. I was excited, nervous, but I was SO READY to change the lives of so many women who were suffering silently.  

I started to treat in Orthopedics (shoulder, knee, back, hip, foot, etc.) until I was able to go to my courses that would allow me to treat pelvic floor dysfunction.  

On my first day of my first course, I was so conflicted with the fact that I had not learned about these techniques, treatments, or methods until now! I was upset that I had no knowledge of these treatments all the way through my doctoral program. 

I became OBSESSED.  

Then I realized that the healthcare model is not equipped for my dreams and ambitions. 

I got my training and was seeing 2-3 patients per hour. 

I was not getting paid much money, I paid a lot for school and could not pay for my living expenses. 

But most importantly. My patients were being IGNORED in the healthcare system. The complaint of incontinence or peeing your pants was considered NORMAL. It was considered to be something that "just happens." My patients were being told their pain and their dysfunctions were in their head and they needed to remember it was normal. 

I was disgusted. I was working SO hard to see my 20+ patients a day, to help them, to make them feel loved, listened to, cared for....that.... 

I burnt out and got very sick. I ended up getting so sick that I was in and out of the hospital due to the stress of the job for about 3 months.  

It's amazing how things can change in an instance. My husband and I thought I was looking at my last days as a physical therapist and potentially my last days living... 

Now I realized I had to make a HUGE move and I'll tell you about it in the following blog.....

The Beginning of the Journey!

I want to thank you for being a part of my community and family again and for the support you give by reading each of these for me. 

I want to let you in to my story because my story makes me who I am today... and if you're going to have a pelvic floor physical therapist as a provider, you want to have someone that you can relate with. 

I have a 20 year history of being a dancer. I always wanted to be a professional dancer. I dreamed of it, I could taste it. But at the age of 15 my dreams were crushed by the fact that I (please understand this is extremely difficult to be letting you know) was raped. This traumatic event led me to having urinary incontinence and I would pee my pants any time I danced or I was active. I also had pelvic pain, consistent urinary tract infections, and frequent constipation because I had so much pain.  

These symptoms caused me to be so embarrassed about my condition that I would skip dance practice, I would stop trying out for the harder roles, I was just not able to reach my personal best. I was so embarrassed, I was disgusted, I was overwhelmed, I felt guilty and was so full of shame, I had no positive feelings or things to say about myself.

I went until I was about 25 years old (that is 10 years) of dealing with these symptoms. At that point, I was in a doctorate program to become a physical therapist and had no idea pelvic floor physical therapy existed. I went to a clinician and watched how it worked and realized I had a MASSIVE desire to exercise without peeing myself and to have sex without pain, get rid of the pelvic pain all together. I also realized I have a desire to help other women suffering silently. 

I finally went to a healthcare provider, who told me to see a counselor for my "concerns" about pain and leakage. I was observing other pelvic floor physical therapists who would hook their patients up to some machine for 15 minutes. I was running into a road block for my dream of becoming symptoms free.  

Remember how I wanted to help women and help myself? Well, I was being told I'm crazy and it couldn't be done. I was told by other pelvic floor therapists that "this is just how it's done." I felt extremely defeated.

Thank you so much for joining my family and being a part of my blogs. I love being able to share with you all the things about my life and things I’ve gone through. 

I want to get to know you and I think it's important that you get to know me. 

When it comes to choosing your care team, I think it's extremely important to "get" the person. So I felt I needed to let you into my story and hopefully it will resonate with you.

I believe the biggest thing about choosing a healthcare provider is to truly get to know them and have a relationship with them. It is something that is missed out on a lot....and something I refuse to give up. 

Without a relationship and a connection, how in the world can I expect you to trust me with your care or to guide you?

Let's Talk About It...

What is your vagina supposed to look like?

I know, I said it. Out loud and everyone is uncomfortable. But let me tell you something. If you do not know what “normal” or “supposed to look like is, then how will you ever know if something is wrong or not? I mean, come on!

There are some things to consider when using the word “normal” though. First and foremost, please understand that everyone is different. All vaginas are different. All labias are different. All clitoris’s are different.

What I mean when I say “normal” is, are you seeing what you have always seen or are you seeing something out of place?

Your vagina is adaptable. You will go through changes and notice differences when you become pregnant and postpartum, menopause, etc. but you should still be in tune with what your “normal” is so that you know when seeing someone is necessary.

I have attached a video talking about just general anatomy of the vagina, but please note there are many more layers. I will be presenting this the best I can for future purposes, so keep checking my youtube channel!

Okay, so we are ready to look. I recommend either a deep squat with a mirror on the floor, or sitting with a handheld between your legs or a mirror on the floor in front of you.

What are we looking for?

After watching the video below, you want to consider these things for YOUR vagina:

  1. Color of tissue. You should have a nice pink, healthy color to your vagina, especially inside the labia "lips)

  2. Labia. Pay attention to how your tissue typically lays. Do you have the labia minora that is going further than the labia majora (this is not a negative thing), is the labia hanging down? Get to know your labia!

  3. What happens when you kegel. When you properly perform a pelvic floor contraction, do you notice a nice, healthy close and lift? If not, why?

  4. What happens when you cough. Is there tissue coming out? Is there discharge coming out with coughing? Do you close and lift with your cough?

  5. Where is your clit? I know, you’re laughing. That’s okay! But if you know where it is, you are more likely to be able to get the sensations you truly want and be able to communicate with your partner.

  6. How wide is your hole? This is important because when you become pregnant and when you give birth, this can change, but you need to be able to understand what is your normal.

But with that being the normal stuff you should know about, what are some things to be concerned about?

  1. Tissue color being red, purple, or any color not pink. If there is blood or any tissue color that may be abnormal, please note you should get that checked. This includes warts, spots, moles that are abnormal, new “pimples” or spots as well.

  2. Tissue coming to the outside of your vagina. This can be an indicator of prolapse or something going on that needs to be treated.

If you notice that your anatomy does not look like that of the pictures or my video DON”T FREAK OUT! It may be totally normal. Please understand that you could have a perfectly normal vagina, just different anatomy.

I often find myself bringing out a mirror to show my patients what they should be looking for. Please let me know if you need this! I can find someone in your area to help you.

Sleeping Naked

I know, am I really going there?? Yes, I am. I want to break through any of the boundaries we have about our bodies and any false belief we have about “down there.”

Did you know there are many health benefits to sleeping naked? Now, for me this used to be something that would make me so nervous. What if I had discharge? What if I had leakage? What if something happened that my partner would think was gross??

But then I started to try it. I got over my fears and started to strip down each night. I started to wake up feeling much more rested, more in tune with my body, and I felt like I had a healthier vagina. So, I started to dig into why I might be feeling like that or why I’m feeling better. Here is what I found.

When you sleep naked, your natural thermostat in your body is not affected by clothing. Your skin and your body are actually at the temperature it is meant to be. When we wear underwear or clothes to bed, we are restricting this natural thermostat and causing a more enclosed, heated temperature. Especially near the vagina.

When you do not wear underwear to bed, you allow the vagina to “air out.” This just means there are no trapped bacteria or harmful chemicals that cannot be released during sleep. This can help to decrease vaginal infections!!!

You can actually wake up with more confidence. This is mostly due to getting a better nights rest from not having the normal restrictions you have from clothing, but who doesn’t want to wake up more confident??? Sleeping naked can also increased intimacy with your partner. I often tell my patients who feel as if their relationships are lacking intimacy or sex, to try sleeping naked. Almost always wakes them up with a surprise!!!

For me, the fact that I wake up more rested, I have more intimacy with my partner, and I feel as if I truly am sleeping enough is plenty of reason for me!

Give it a shot! Try taking it off and sleeping!!!!!
